US President Obama met Pope Francis for the first time today at Vatican in Rome. Obama called himself a 'great admirer' of the pope.
In the meeting they were to discuss the fight against poverty and controversies over abortion and gay rights. Their historic first meeting comes as Obama's administration and the church remain deeply split on issues of abortion and contraception.
'It is a great honor. I'm a great admirer,' Obama said. 'Thank you so much for receiving me.'
He also sent regards from first lady Michelle Obama and his daughters, who met Pope Benedict XVI during a 2009 visit here.
The two were scheduled to meet for half an hour but their private discussion lasted 52 minutes.
